| MINI RECAP |
| The Binghamton
Black Bears (34-5-1) defeated the Port Huron Prowlers
(22-13-1) Saturday night in Port Huron in a shootout, 6-5. There was
no scoring in the opening twenty minutes, but the tone for the night
was firmly established early inside McMorran Place. Just 3:31 into
the period, matching roughing minors were assessed to Dan
Wieber (BIN) and Reggie Milette (PHP),
setting the stage for what would become a highly physical and
emotionally charged frame. Things escalated at the 5:44 mark, when a
series of altercations resulted in multiple penalties on both sides.
Kyle Stephan was whistled for roughing, Mac Jansen
for goaltender interference, while Ben Brockway
received roughing and unsportsmanlike conduct minors. The sequence
culminated in a fight between Austin D’Orazio and
Luke James, each receiving five-minute majors. The
parade to the penalty box continued throughout the period. Dan Stone
was called for hooking at 6:23, and coincidental unsportsmanlike
conduct minors were handed to Gehrett Sargis and
Bryan Parsons at 14:33. Port Huron later took
consecutive minors, Timothy Organ for holding at
15:28 and Matt Graham for unsportsmanlike conduct
at 16:20, but Binghamton was unable to convert. Despite the lack of
goals, the period was anything but quiet. Big hits, frequent
post-whistle scrums, and consistent physical engagement defined the
opening frame. Binghamton outshot Port Huron 11–5 in the first
period and finished 0-for-2 on the power play, while the Prowlers
went 0-for-1. After a physical but scoreless opening frame, the middle period opened up offensively with five combined goals and constant momentum swings. Port Huron struck first at 5:52 as Lukas Lacny finished a play set up by Matt Graham and Reggie Milette to make it 1–0. Just under two minutes later, matching delay-of-game penalties to Kyle Stephan and Alex Johnson created 4-on-4 hockey, and the Prowlers capitalized again. Ben Brockway scored at 7:50, assisted by Brett Lockhart and Bobby Price, extending the lead to 2–0. Binghamton responded later in the period during another stretch of open ice. With 6:10 remaining, Austin D’Orazio converted a 4-on-4 chance at 13:50 off a setup from Mac Jansen and Dan Stone to cut the deficit to 2–1. The Black Bears then pulled even late in the frame. A well-placed pass from Emerson Emery found Jacob Shankar, who finished at 16:29 with Tyson Kirkby also earning an assist, tying the game 2–2. However, the equalizer was short-lived. Following an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty to Shankar after the goal, Port Huron went to the power play and quickly regained the lead. Reggie Milette scored at 17:33, assisted by Lukas Lacny, putting the Prowlers ahead 3–2 heading into the intermission. The period also featured heavy discipline issues, including multiple minor penalties, a 10-minute game misconduct to C.J. Stubbs for abuse of officials, and another game misconduct to Brant Sherwood late in the period. Port Huron outshot Binghamton 16–11 in the second period. The third period opened with immediate fireworks, as special teams took center stage. Just 1:43 into the period, with Bobby Price serving a roughing minor, Black Bears captain Tyson Kirkby capitalized on the power play for his 12th goal of the season, finishing a setup from Mac Jansen and Austin D’Orazio to tie the game at 3–3. Moments later, Port Huron’s Ben Brockway was assessed a hooking penalty, and Binghamton struck again. Only 35 seconds after his first tally, Kirkby netted his second power-play goal of the night at 2:28, his 13th of the season, once again assisted by Jansen and D’Orazio, giving the Black Bears their first lead of the game at 4–3. Port Huron answered midway through the period. At 13:56, Artu Heikkila finished a play from Luke James to even the score at 4–4. The back-and-forth continued late. With Jesse Anderson in the box for tripping, Reggie Milette converted on the power play at 16:26, assisted by Bobby Price and Lukas Lacny, restoring a Prowlers lead at 5–4. But the drama was far from over. With 30 seconds remaining and Matt Graham in the penalty box for slashing, Binghamton pulled its goaltender for the extra attacker. The move paid off as Gehrett Sargis buried a power-play goal at 19:47, assisted by Austin D’Orazio and Tyson Kirkby, forcing overtime with the score tied 5–5. The third period alone featured six goals and continued physicality, including multiple minors and a 10-minute game misconduct assessed to Gavin Yates. The five-minute overtime session featured end-to-end action with quality scoring opportunities for both sides, but neither team was able to find the decisive goal. Strong goaltending and defensive recoveries sent the contest to a shootout. No penalties were assessed in the extra frame. In the shootout, Binghamton gained the early edge. Nick Swain opened the skills competition with a goal to make it 1–0. Lukas Lacny was denied on Port Huron’s first attempt. Mac Jansen then extended the advantage with a goal in the second round, pushing the score to 2–0. Reggie Milette kept the Prowlers alive with a goal in round two, narrowing the deficit to 2–1. However, after Scott Ramaekers was stopped for Binghamton and Bobby Price missed for Port Huron, the Black Bears secured the 6–5 shootout victory. The win completed a weekend sweep in Port Huron and improved Binghamton’s season record in the head-to-head series to 5–1–0. |
