Black Bears sign D-Man, Steven Spetz
BINGHAMTON, N.Y. — The Binghamton Black Bears have added another defenseman to their roster, signing Steven Spetz as Head Coach Brant Sherwood continues to build depth on the blue line during the 2026-27 season.

Spetz joins the Black Bears after beginning the 2026-27 campaign with the Macon Mayhem of the Southern Professional Hockey League (SPHL), where he appeared in three games before making the move to Binghamton.
The Oak Ridge, New Jersey, native comes to the professional ranks following his collegiate career at the University of Massachusetts Boston. During two seasons with the Beacons, Spetz appeared in 48 games, recording three goals and seven assists for 10 points. In his final collegiate season in 2025-26, he registered three goals and five assists in 27 games.

Spetz began his junior career with the Danbury Jr. Hat Tricks of the North American Hockey League (NAHL), appearing in 62 games over two seasons. He later played for the Jersey Hitmen of the National Collegiate Development Conference (NCDC) before continuing his collegiate career at Wilkes University and eventually transferring to UMass Boston.

His signing adds another option to a Black Bears defensive group that includes Jacob Hamilton, Cheechoo Lathlin, Steven Ford, Scott Ramaekers and Derek Klein. Klein joined the club ahead of the team's recent road trip to Columbus, Georgia, to face the Columbus River Dragons.
The Black Bears have also had to adjust their defensive personnel following an injury to Dan Wieber. With Wieber unavailable, Sherwood moved Gehrett Sargis to the defensive corps, providing additional coverage on the blue line.

The addition of Spetz gives Sherwood another option as he manages the defensive rotation and works to maintain depth on the back end. With a demanding Federal Prospects Hockey League (FPHL) season ahead, having additional personnel available on defense can prove valuable as the Black Bears navigate injuries, lineup changes and the challenges of a long season.

Spetz now gets an opportunity to continue his professional hockey career in Binghamton with the three-time Commissioner's Cup champions.
