| The Binghamton
Black Bears (1-0-0) defeated the Watertown Wolves
(0-0-1) in a shoot-out in front of a sell out crowd on Banner
Raising Ceremony night in Binghamton, NY. With 8:06 left to go in
the 1st period, the Watertown Wolves go up first with an unassisted
goal from Steven Klink. The Black Bears then return
the favor with their first goal of the season, scored by the Captain
Tyson Kirkby with 6:03 left to go in the 1st
period. Quickly into the 2nd period, the Black Bears took the lead
with Austin Thompson getting on the score-sheet
with his first goal of the season at the 2:51 mark. Just nine
seconds later the Wolves tied the game at two with a Brad
Reitter shot after the puck was turned over in the slot
right in front of Connor McAnanama. Kirkby scored
his 2nd goal of the game putting the Black Bears up 3 to 2 at the
6:53 mark of the 2nd period. The Black Bears take a 2 goal lead at
4-2 with the hat-trick goal for the Captain, Tyson Kirkby
with 8:35 left to go in the middle period. The Wolves get to within
one goal with Klink's second goal of the night to make this a 4-3
Black Bears lead just 6:54 into the 3rd period. With Ivan
Bondarenko in the box for Slashing, the Wolves tie the game
up at 4 goals a piece with a Jake Shultz power play
goal with 7:09 left in the 3rd period. The overtime period had
almost as many penalties with three as shots on goal which was 6 but
no one was able to put this game away with an overtime goal. The
Black Bears only needed two shooters in the skills competition to
end the game. CJ Stubbs took the first attempt,
missing after coming in wide on the Wolves net-minder,
Breandan Colgan. But it was the new guy, Mac Jansen
who came straight in on Colgan, and then lifted the puck up, was
able to get the puck past Colgan for the only goal of the shoot out.
McAnanama stopped all three of the Watertown Wolves shooters,
securing the 5-4 win for the defending Commissioner's Cup Champions. |
