The Binghamton Black Bears (30-5-1) lost their 2nd
straight game to the
Twin City Thunderbirds (15-17-1) on Saturday by the score of 7-5.
The Twin City Thunderbirds jumped out to an early lead in the final
game of the five-game regular season series against the Binghamton
Black Bears on home ice in Binghamton. Connor Craig
opened the scoring just 4:23 into the first period, beating the
Black Bears on Twin City’s second shot of the night to make it 1–0.
The Thunderbirds extended the lead at the 8:01 mark when
Jacob Schnapp, set up by Gus Ford, made it
2–0. Binghamton responded on the power play with Roman
Kraemer serving a hooking minor, as CJ Stubbs
buried his 27th goal of the season at 9:19 to pull the Black Bears
within one. Momentum swung further Binghamton’s way when Mac
Jansen tied the game at 2–2 with his 24th goal of the
season with 8:54 remaining in the period. That tie was short-lived,
however, as Schnapp struck again just 46 seconds later, restoring
the Thunderbirds’ lead at 3–2. With Austin D’Orazio
in the box for hooking, Twin City capitalized on the power play once
more, as Jon Buttitta scored with 5:38 left in the
period to give the Thunderbirds a 4–2 advantage heading into the
first intermission. The Thunderbirds added to their lead early in
the second period. Just six seconds after Dan Wieber
exited the penalty box following an elbowing minor, Chris
Mott found the back of the net at the 3:29 mark of the
middle frame, giving Twin City their fifth goal of the night. The
Black Bears came out with urgency in the third period and cut into
the deficit early. Kyle Stephan made it a two-goal
game when he scored his sixth goal of the season just 2:52 into the
final frame. Binghamton continued to push, and with Zach
White in the penalty box for roughing, CJ Stubbs
struck again on the power play, scoring his second man-advantage
goal of the night at 6:46 to pull the Black Bears within one. Twin
City answered quickly. Just over a minute later, Zach White
redeemed himself with a breakaway goal, slipping a shot past Black
Bears netminder CJ Hapward at the 8:00 mark to
restore the Thunderbirds’ two-goal cushion. With Stubbs serving an
abuse of officials minor, the Thunderbirds capitalized once more on
the power play as Chris Mott netted his second goal
of the game at 10:12. Binghamton refused to go quietly. With the
extra attacker on the ice, Ivan Bondarenko scored
his 10th goal of the season to make it 7–5, but the comeback effort
would end there.
