October 29, 2022 - Binghamton Black Bears News Release

DANBURY – The Binghamton Black Bears fell in overtime for the first time this season to the Danbury Hat Tricks 5-4. Danbury collects five points over the weekend battle with Binghamton.

The Black Bears had a much better start to their game, jumping on Danbury early, pestering Brain Wilson with shots. Binghamton was able to out-shoot Danbury in a period for the first time on Saturday night. The Hat Tricks however, were able to get on the board first as Evan Lugo scored a short-handed goal to break the ice. Geno DeAngelo would answer right away, tallying a power play goal to even the game up at 1-1. Danbury would go on to take the lead again on a goal by Dustin Jesseau, making it 2-1.

An unlikely hero would emerge in Mathieu Boislard. Boislard late in the period, would have a wrist shot that would leak past Wilson to tie the game at 2-2. A night-and-day difference in opening periods compared to the Friday night contest.

Ivashkin scored 2 goals in the Black Bears loss
The Black Bears were able to keep the pressure up offensively in the second but would not be rewarded until late in the frame. Danbury jumped out to a two-goal advantage as they led 4-2 deep into the middle period. Jesse Anderson would connect on a pass from Tyler Gjurich to tally a power play goal, the Black Bears second of the night, cutting the lead to one, and trailing 4-3 going into the second intermission.

The Black Bears power play had some early opportunities to cash-in once the third period started, but could not sneak one past Wilson on the man advantage. Binghamton’s defense, led by fill-in coach Kyle Powell, stood tall in the final 20 not allowing Danbury to grab any insurance goals. Late in the period once again, Cam Yarwood would earn a game-tying assist, setting up Nikita Ivashkin with the game-tying goal with just over three minutes left in regulation. Both teams would have a chance to end the game before overtime, but the goalies stood tall. Each team secured one point in the Empire Division as the game was headed for overtime.

Riley McVeigh made his Black Bears debut in between the pipes. McVeigh made key saves in the third period to keep Binghamton within striking distance, saving 30 of 35 shots he faced.

A high sticking penalty put the Danbury power play back on the ice and Dustin Jesseau would score the only power play goal of the weekend for the Hat Tricks. Danbury wins 5-4 in overtime, but the Black Bears come home with an all-important point in the standings.

Binghamton will be on the road again next weekend as they will take on the Elmira Mammoth for the second and third matchups of the season. Puck drop is scheduled on Friday for 7:35 P.M. Fans can tune in all season long on FOX 1430 Binghamton and the IHeart Radio app. The Black Bears will return home on November 11th &12th for Military Appreciation Weekend.
