Hello my friends in the world of the Binghamton Senators and the American Hockey League. This space on the Web will not be your typical blog or beat-writers view of the AHL’s Binghamton Senators, but instead more of a “Big City” view as if you were in New York City, Chicago or Los Angeles reading a column out of one of the major newspapers.
One of the lost arts of coverage of sports is one of the columnist view. I believe many people look at sport with a beat-writers eye, using blogs on the Web to convey their coverage of the team they follow or cover. Don’t get me wrong, what these writers do is great and for all intense purposes you will get more statistical information from those blogs. Binghamton’s beat-writer gives a lot of great information as it becomes available. Signings, demotions, injuries, game time information and so on. If you like that information, I would certainly encourage you to follow that blog and twitter account, as I follow many of the beat-writers from around league myself.
What will be different about Off the Post, is that it will be written based more on opinion, insight and my interaction with the players, coaches and staff of the Binghamton Senators. So what are my credentials? Well I have hosted the Power Play Post Show for 7 seasons and will be embarking on the 8th season of the PPPS. With over 500 interviews of players, coaches, broadcasters and print media members under my belt combined with my vast knowledge of hockey from playing the game and watching since I was 8 years old; I will bring opinion and knowledge to this column.
I will not write about every little signing that the Ottawa Senators make, or transaction that happens from Ottawa to Binghamton to Elmira, or give in game play-by-play because in my eyes if I were never watching the games due to typing on a laptop, then I would never know enough about how the game was played to provide a true insight on how the game progressed from beginning to end. You need to know how the story was told by the play on the ice before you can write about how and why the game ended the way it did.
I will write articles 2 to 4 times a week about players, series of games, problems and succusses with the team. I will leave the beat-writing to the people who are good at it.
What I am looking forward to is constant interaction with the fans of this column, fans of the Binghamton Senators and of the American Hockey League. Via your comments, e-mails and our conversations, I believe we can bring a “Big City” column to a dedicated and strong hockey market and what a better way to start a column then being able to say “Defending Calder Cup Champions, your Binghamton Senators”.
