Binghamton's Peter Ferraro named SHER-WOOD AHL Player of the Week

The AHL.com

January 22, 1997

WEST SPRINGFIELD, MA...The American Hockey League announced today that Binghamton Rangers' right wing Peter Ferraro has been named Sher-Wood AHL Player of the Week for the period ending Sunday, January 19, 1997. Ferraro recorded 8 points (6-2-8) in 3 games as the Rangers posted a 2-0-1 record. In recognition of his achievement, Sher-Wood will contribute a dozen hockey sticks and a case of InGlasCo pucks to the local minor hockey association of Peter's choice.

The week began for the 23 year old native of Port Jefferson, NY on Friday, following his appearance at the 1997 Chrysler AHL All-Star Classic in Saint John, New Brunswick, as the Rangers played three games in three nights. On Friday, the 5'10", 175 lb right winger scored the Rangers' first goal that led to a 3-2 victory over the Worcester IceCats. The next evening, Ferraro notched a natural hat trick, snapping a 1-1 tie with Syracuse and propelling the Rangers to a 5-1 home ice win over the Empire State Division leading Crunch. To conclude a busy week for the former University of Maine Black Bear, he would assist on two goals before scoring twice in the third period to lift the Rangers to a 4-4 tie with the Portland Pirates.

Drafted by the New York Rangers as their first choice, 24th overall in the 1992 NHL Entry Draft, Ferraro made his NHL debut during the 1995-96 season as he appeared in 5 games with New York. This year he has been re-called for a single game. On the season, Ferraro has recorded 37 points which is second only to twin brother Chris on the Rangers. His 22 goals are a team high. Chris, who also played in the 1997 AHL All-Star Game, was selected as Sher-Wood Player of the Week for the period ending December 16, 1996.

Others nominated for the Sher-Wood AHL Player of the Week include Norm Maracle of the Adirondack Red Wings, Peter Sidorkiewicz of the Albany River Rats, Craig Ferguson of the Carolina Monarchs, Ralph Intranuovo of the Hamilton Bulldogs, Iain Fraser of the Kentucky Thoroughblades and Shawn McCosh of the Philadelphia Phantoms.
