Thompson scored the Black Bears 15th short-handed goal of the season.
So it does appear lately that the Black Bears are playing from behind, then storming, battling, whatever descriptive word you want to use, back into the game. Here is a little behind the scenes, press box conversation for you. It was myself, Gary Ryan of The Fed League Flash, Thomas Turgeon of FOX40 and Bruce Juneau from ABC 34, and before the first goal for the Hat Tricks was scored, I said to my colleagues, “As soon as the first goal goes in, the flood gates will open”. So when Aleksandr Vasilyev’s goal went in at the 1:55 mark of the 1st period, an illegal goal, but will talk about that later, you can sense a change in the game. The two teams started to open up a little bit. And once that happens you give the Black Bears ability to move North to South on the ice, it changes their game and they are able to produce grade A chances which then allows them to score goals. The Black Bears have been down by 2 goals twice to Danbury in their last two games, then Watertown by 4 goals and yet come back like a championship does and gets the victory in all three games and that’s just in the last 3 weeks.

The Binghamton Black Bears won their 45th game last night. They defeated the Danbury Hat Tricks 6-3. And unlike the March 14th game, there seemed to be a little more intensity to last night’s game. A sense of urgency from the Black Bears when they saw themselves down by 2 in the middle period. Some physicality that happened as the two teams were battling on the boards and in the corners. It just felt like, Danbury had to get the game more physical as they were worried that the Black Bears would come back and start to run away with the game. The Black Bears didn’t shy away from the physicality as well. They wanted to put the screws to the Hat Tricks and prove once again, they to can play the physical game and produce goals. Let’s be honest, a good fore-check can produce an opening down low that allows a skilled shooter the ability to snag goals.

Last night, the Hat Tricks scored first. They were not on the power play, they were even strength. A mistake by the Hat Tricks should have led to a “Too Many Men on the Ice” two minute minor, but the referees and both linesmen did not catch it. In the video, you can see when Vasilyev scores, there was 6 Hat Tricks skaters on the ice, four of the skaters were in the offensive zone, Vasilyev had Dale Deon beat in front of Connor McAnanama and the other two skaters when he scored were in the neutral zone and you can see all six skaters celebrate at the same time. This happens, teams when your in the 2nd period mess up the changes all the time, but the referees have to be better than this. The goal should have been waived off and a penalty called. But it wasn’t and we move on.

Chase Harwell, a player that can be a thorn in the side of the Black Bears scored just over 4 minutes later and the Black Bears were down two to nothing. But the game was ramping up and getting a little more physical, getting more open on the ice as well and that’s when 56 seconds after Harwell scored, Dan Wieber takes a shot, scores the Black Bears first goal of the game. Wieber’s second goal of the season was all the Black Bears needed, it broke their damn and their skill took over. Chris Mott scored his 13th goal, not an unlucky goal but the game tying goal and his celly was top notch. With Kyle Stephan in the box for interference in the middle period, the Black Bears scored their 15th short-handed goal of the season off the stick of Austin Thompson. That was the Black Bears 15th shorty, their first since February 28th and it was Thommer’s 4th man down goal of the season. The Black Bears are deadly on the penalty kill with only the Hat Tricks remotely close to them in this category.

C-Mac saved 22 of 25 shots and won his 29th game of the season.
We moved into the third period and the Hat Tricks still did not have an answer for the Black Bears. CJ Stubbs scored an unanswered goal after taking the puck in the neutral zone, loading up his slap shot and cleanly getting it past McCollum. This put the Black Bears up, 4-2 at this point. Just past the 10 minute mark of the 3rd period, Thompson scored his 31st goal of the season and his 2nd of the game, the Black Bears were starting to run a way with it. Did anyone at this point remember the Black Bears were down by two goals? I don’t think so. Cameron Clark kept his scoring touch alive with with his 20th goal of the season with 4:15 left to go in the game, which led to the shift later a Jonny Ruiz goal at the 16:32 mark and a pretty hefty celebration from Ruiz. And yes I understand fans questioning the celebration by Ruiz, but let’s be honest for a second. Teams when they play the Black Bears know that they have to do something to get into the heads of the Black Bears players and coaches. When they don’t, they don’t stand a chance. A little Ruiz grand-standing before the end of the game, is his subtle way of trying to provoke the Black Bears into making a mistake tomorrow. Will it happen? Doubtful.

There were three fights in this game. In the 1st period Dan Wieber tussled with Chase Harwell, not a great fight for either guy but Harwell got the instigator after Ruiz was pushed into the boards before the two dropped their gloves. The other two fights were in the 3rd period with Scott Ramaekers and Josh Newberg dropping their gloves 7:46 into the final period with Ramaekers getting the extra in that tilt for roughing. With 13:13 left to go and with what seemed like a player leaving the bench with the sole purpose to fight and not complete a hockey play, Noah Robinson left the Hat Tricks bench to fight Donald Olivieri. We have seen this before, last season and it resulted in the Black Bears having to be down a roster spot for 6 games due to the penalty. But with the referees missing what they missed already in the game, the penalty was not called and the Don Father and Robinson went at it. Did the Black Bears win all the fights? It doesn’t matter, their goal isn’t to win fights, it’s to win games and pocket trophies.

Listen, in the end, only nerds like myself are going to remember coming from behind, something the Black Bears did so many times last season. Just check out the championship ring, it has it marked on them in remembrance. What people are going to remember is that they were one of 4,893, the 8th time this season the Black Bears have sold out where their team scored 6, won the game and everyone went home happy. Tonight the two teams meet in Danbury for their 10th game of the season, the Black Bears have taken 7 of the 9 meetings and look to make it 8. They will travel down later today and play in one of the most hostile Arenas in the league. They have everything wrapped up, this is just about winning games and keeping the Hat Tricks momentum down.

You cannot argue the contributions of Chris Mott and what he is doing for the team as he scored the game tying goal for the Black Bears.
