B-SENS CAPTURE 2-1 OVERTIME VICTORY

The Binghamton Senators extended their winning streak to three games on Saturday night with a 2-1 overtime victory against the Hamilton Bulldogs at the Broome County Veterans Memorial Arena.

After a scoreless first period in which Hamilton out shot Binghamton 15-7, the Sens recorded the only goal of the second period at the 4:00 mark when Denis Hamel capitalized on a 2-man advantage for the Sens. The goal marked Hamel’s third goal in as many games. Jason Spezza set up the goal by finding a wide open Hamel on the opposite side of the crease. Hamel buried the pass giving the Sens a 1-0 lead. Anton Volchenkov was credited with the other assist on the goal. The remaining 16:00 of the second were played scoreless and the Sens headed into the dressing room with a one-goal advantage.

Bulldogs center Tomas Plekanec got his team on the board with a power-play goal of his own at 12:26 of the third period. Once again, the teams would finish out the period with no additional scoring.

It didn’t take long for the Sens to wrap the game up once the puck was dropped for the overtime period. Jason Spezza was able to tip an Anton Volchenkov shot past Hamilton’s rookie goaltender Yann Danis only 32 seconds into overtime. The goal marked Spezza’s second point of the night (1 goal, 1 assist) as well as Volchenkov’s second point (2 assists).

Billy Thompson got his first start of the year for the Sens stopping 30 of 31 shots while Danis turned away 29 of Binghamton’s 31 shots.

Binghamton was 1 for 6 on the power play while Hamilton finished the game 1 for 5.

The Sens are in action tomorrow night as they travel to the Arena at Harbor Yard to take on the Bridgeport Sound Tigers at 4:05pm. Countdown to Faceoff kicks off at 3:35pm on WINR 680 AM.
