The club also announced that Mike Busniuk would return as assistant coach with the Binghamton Senators of the American Hockey League (AHL).

Carvel, having spent his last five seasons with the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim, joins John Paddock as the other assistant coach and is also teamed with Ron Low (goaltending and pro scout), Randy Lee (strength and conditioning) and Pierre Groulx (video).

“Greg comes highly recommended by Bryan (Murray) and I believe he will be great addition to our coaching staff,” said Muckler. “We’re also very pleased to have Mike return to Binghamton and work with new head coach Dave Cameron.”

“Having worked with Greg in Anaheim for the past two seasons, he had a big impact of the performance on the team when we went to the (Stanley Cup) finals (in 2003),” said Murray. “Greg is technically solid and as a player’s type of coach he brings with him a high level of individual teaching.”

“I’m ecstatic about the opportunity to come to an organization with its sights on the Stanley Cup, has such highly skilled players and knowledgeable and supportive fans,” said Carvel. “I’m looking forward to work again with Bryan. I have the most respect for his knowledge of the game and team management.”

Carvel, 34, was added to the Mighty Ducks staff in May 1999 and then promoted in August 2003 to assistant coach, serving his first three seasons as scouting coordinator and added video coaching duties in 2002-03. Before joining Anaheim, the native of Canton, N.Y. spent two years with the Lowell Lock Monsters (AHL) as director of hockey operations.

Carvel graduated from St. Lawrence University with a bachelor’s degree in political science and mathematics in 1993. In four season at St. Lawrence from 1989-90 to 1992-93, he recorded 124 points (37-87) and 87 penalty minutes in 124 games. Carvel was a Academic All-American, named to the ECAC all-rookie team and best defensive forward (1992-93) and served as team captain at St. Lawrence in his senior year. He went on to play one season with Ostervala in Sweden first division. Carvel was drafted 22nd by the Pittsburgh Penguins in the NHL supplemental draft in 1991.

Following his playing career, Carvel became the assistant athletic director and assistant hockey coach at Canterbury Prep School in New Milford, Conn. He then went on to attain his master’s degree in sports management at the University of Massachusetts-Amherst in 1996. While earning his degree, Carvel served as an assistant coach for the Amherst College hockey team.

The 52-year old Busniuk, who spent four seasons (1993-97) as an assistant coach with the Binghamton Rangers, assisted John Paddock last season in Binghamton. He and Paddock also spent three seasons with the AHL’s Hartford Wolf Pack.
