Arena to host light-hearted hockey exhibition

BINGHAMTON -- Dave Hadasz' favorite movie is Slap Shot.

It was while watching the comedy classic two years ago that the idea first popped in his head to create a team that accentuates the fun side of hockey.

The New York Blades is the result.

The Blades, who call themselves "hockey's version of the Harlem Globetrotters," are scheduled to play 6 p.m. Oct. 10 at Broome County Veterans Memorial Arena.

"There will be heavy interaction with the fans," Hadasz said at a Friday afternoon press conference at the Arena introducing the team. "It will be fun for the whole family."

The Blades are a team made up of former minor-league, college and junior hockey players -- many of whom have acting experience. They will play a unit named the Death Valley Vultures (the Washington Generals of this tour).

The games will include player introductions featuring lasers, fireworks and flame projectors, as well as on-ice skits.

Hadasz declined to give a preview of the action.

"We can't give too much away," Hadasz said. "There will be antics during the game, during face-offs and between periods. There will always be something going on."

Tickets are $24 for adults, $12 for kids 12-and-under, and go on sale at 10 a.m. Monday at the Arena box office and all Ticketmaster locations. Children ages 2-and-under will be admitted free.
