The word around the AHL is that St. Mike's Majors coach Dave Cameron has moved to the top of the list of candidates for the job vacated last month when the Senators decided to promote Binghamton coach John Paddock to a job in Ottawa.

The 28-year-old Cameron has spent four years with the Majors as coach and director of hockey operations. Another candidate is former Senators winger Jody Hull. There's also talk that Paddock will be asked to work in Binghamton as well, if there's an NHL lockout.

"Dave Cameron could be a guy who is ready to make the next step," an NHL executive said yesterday. "He's a good coach and he'll be able to relate to those young players. He's really done a great job with the Majors. He could be ready."
